Yesterday's plan was to move our thermostat from the "den" to a more central location and so that it wasn't positioned right above a return vent. Simple enough--right? Then it was on to reattaching our second set of stairs off of our porch and start/finish building our side door on the barnage. P.S. Kevin took the day off from work.
So here is the actuality of the day's events:
Removed old thermostat, and smartly attach a mulligan string in case those wires become fearful of the light of day.

After much deliberation, a small hole was drilled in one wall only to find out that there was a cross support between the studs that we couldn't get pass. Plan A, no gold--NEXT!

Plan B: Try for the wall below the stairs. Drilled hole. Same cross beam, but this time we were able to actually drill a hole on the opposite side of the wall (in the basement stair well) and feed the wire across. Said wire was supposed to be pulled from old thermostat and would easily then be moved to Plan B's location. But, of course, this plan was foiled when old thermostat wire was discovered to be wedged between a support beam and the floor. Of course we thought of cutting it, but after measuring, we wouldn't have enough to attach to the new thermostat. Bugger!

Plan C and C 1/2: We found the original thermostat wiring (before central air unit that now doesn't exist) and we were excited to be able to use that one. Of course it reached just fine, hooking up easily. But after scratching our heads as to why the heat wasn't turning on, Kevin discovered that the line was completely severed in one location. Severed line = no juice... bah! (Interruption for electrical inspection for the garage. We didn't pass... see next entry.) Run to store to purchase complete wiring.

And now we aren't sure if a programmable, digital thermostat will work in our old, open floor plan home. The furnace runs a lot more now--not sure if it is supposed to. In our last apartment, the furnace turned on this much and we were told that it how the new efficient furnaces work. I think we should have it checked...
